Angel Falls, located in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park, is the tallest uninterrupted waterfall in the world. With a staggering height of 979 meters (3,212 feet) and a continuous drop of 807 meters (2,648 feet), it towers over any other waterfall on the planet, making it one of Earth’s most breathtaking natural wonders.

Where Is It Located?

Angel Falls is hidden deep within the Guayana Highlands of southeastern Venezuela, in a remote and dense jungle. It's part of the Churún River, which flows off the edge of a giant flat-topped mountain called Auyán-Tepui. These table mountains, or tepuis, are unique to the region and create dramatic landscapes unlike anywhere else in the world.

Due to its isolated location, the falls are not easy to reach. Most visitors must take a flight followed by a river trip through the rainforest, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery.

How Did It Get Its Name?

The waterfall is named after Jimmie Angel, an American aviator who accidentally discovered it in 1933 while searching for a gold ore bed. His plane later crashed on the top of Auyán-Tepui in 1937, drawing international attention to the falls. Though known as “Salto Ángel” in Spanish, the waterfall also has an Indigenous name: Kerepakupai Merú, used by the Pemon people of the region.

Natural Beauty and Importance

The water often turns into mist before it reaches the bottom, due to the extreme height. The falls are especially stunning during the rainy season (June to December), when water flow is strongest. The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, with tropical rainforest, exotic wildlife, and rare plant species.
